How To Apply For an Internship

Deadlines

Application packages must be postmarked by:
line bullet  March 15 for the July through December session
line bullet  September 15 for the January through June session

If March 15 or September 15 falls on a weekend, applications are due the following Monday.

Application Contents

Please submit the following original documents with signatures. You may submit transcripts and recommendation letters separately from the rest of the package. Electronic and faxed documents will not be accepted in place of original documents.
  1. Letter of application stating:
    A) your full name and address on the first page
    B) why you want this internship
    C) your goals for this internship
    D) your preferred work areas at NCI - select from Intern Placement under Job Descriptions
    E) how you found out about NCI's Health Communication Internship Program
  2. Your resume
  3. A completed OF-612 form: MS Word format | PDF format
    You can leave the "Announcement Number" and "Grade" sections blank or write "N/A."
  4. A letter of nomination and recommendation from your graduate-school dean, director, or advisor specifying your status within your graduate program and your expected date of graduation or the date your degree was earned.
  5. A second letter of recommendation from a professor, advisor, or professional associate.
  6. Official transcripts of all completed graduate courses, a final undergraduate transcript(s), and any other coursework you took. The required minimum undergraduate GPA is 2.75.
  7. Work samples such as clips, recent papers, or publications. Limit: 3 samples. Please do not send originals. Writing samples will not be returned.

Selection Process

Applications are distributed to the various offices at NCI that are interested in hiring an intern for that particular session. After reviewing the applications, the offices may call the applicants for a telephone interview. Several offices may call a single applicant.

Applicants will be notified of their status at the end of the selection process. The selection process takes approximately four to six weeks from the deadline.
